Claude's Chrome bug hunt, Anthropic's S-1, and what each API key costs

A Claude model found serious holes in Chrome, Safari, Android, Windows and Linux, the fixes are out, so update every device this week.

Only Claude. Three changes from the last seven days and one small script to add. Four minutes.

01Update Chrome and your phones after Claude's bug hunt Act now

Who it’s for. Everyone with a work laptop, phone or website.

What happened. On 27 October Anthropic published results from an unreleased internal research model. It built working attacks on Chrome and Safari, a way into a locked Pixel 9 over USB, a crash attack on Windows servers and a takeover of some Linux servers. Every bug went to its maker first. Google has patched 62 of them as of Chrome 156, and Apple, Microsoft and the Linux kernel team have shipped fixes too.

Why it matters. A fix only protects a device that has taken the update. Anthropic got there first this time, and I don't think it'll be the last tool that can do this. A browser left on last month's version is the easiest way into your inbox, your Xero login and your bank.

What to do this week.

  1. On every work computer, open Chrome, go to Settings, then About Chrome, let it update and press Relaunch. Check it reads 156 or later.
  2. Update every Mac, iPhone and iPad from Software Update, and every Android phone from Settings, then System, then Software updates.
  3. Ask your website host to confirm the Linux kernel was updated this month.

02Anthropic files to go public Watch

Who it’s for. Everyone paying for Claude. Your plan doesn't change today.

What happened. On 26 October Anthropic filed its S-1 with the US Securities and Exchange Commission to list on Nasdaq under the ticker ANT. Reported figures from the filing: US$16.3 billion revenue in the first half of 2026 and a US$80.7 billion net loss. Subscriptions, the plans most of us pay for, were US$3.2 billion of that revenue (reported, ABC).

Why it matters. A listed company answers to shareholders every quarter. I don't think prices move this year. Plan limits and what's included in Pro or Team are now worth reading each time they change, at least for me.

What to do this week. If Claude runs part of a weekly process, write down the one thing you'd do by hand if it went down for a day.

03Bigger files and a cost report for API automations Good to know

Who it’s for. Anyone with an automation on a Claude API key, in n8n, Make or a script. If you only use claude.ai or the desktop app, skip ahead.

What happened. On 28 October the largest request the Claude API accepts went from 32 MB to 128 MB. On 29 October the Usage and Cost Analytics API opened in beta, breaking spend down by model, workspace and API key.

Why it matters. A long scanned contract or a batch of invoices that used to bounce can now go in one request. Most owners get one bill and no idea which automation ran it up. Now each key gets its own line.

Add this to your setup this week

A recipe: last week's Claude API spend, by key. About 15 minutes. Needs an admin on a Claude Console organisation (platform.claude.com). No claude.ai plan has this on its own.

  1. Create an Admin API key in the Claude Console (Anthropic's guide). It starts with sk-ant-admin01. Keep it in your password manager.
  2. On your computer, run pip install --upgrade anthropic, then set ANTHROPIC_ADMIN_KEY to that key.
  3. Download the script and run python this-week-in-claude-2026-10-30-recipe.py. The first run prints raw key IDs. Copy each into KEY_NAMES at the top with a name you'll recognise, like "n8n inbox triage", and run it again.

What it does: prints last week's spend per key, largest first, in US dollars before credits. It's a beta, so check it by hand before scheduling it.

Dates to diarise

  • 12 November, Anthropic's updated Usage Policy takes effect
  • 24 November, earliest retirement date for Claude Opus 4.5
  • 30 November, Claude Sonnet 4.5 retires from the API
  • 14 December, standalone claude.ai/design closes
  • Claude Haiku 4.5 retirement notice, still pending

What I’m doing about it

I'll suggest the cost script to the client in my next engagement, so our first talk about their Claude bill starts with a number, not a guess.
